Descrizione: Explore the treasures of Italy such as
Venice, unusual Islands of the Venetian
Lagoon , Ravenna (featured in National
Geographic Traveler’s “top-20 must-see
places in the world for 2013 “ ) and its
waterways , Venetian Villas on the banks of
Brenta Canal, by an unusual perspective :
sailing through Canals, Rivers and Venetian
Lagoon you will have a unique,
unforgettable experience of Italy. For
centuries, when travel was still only
possible by land, river, canal or sea,
Ravenna, Vicenza, Classe, Pomposa and
Venice were some inevitable stopping point
on the way to the eastern Mediterranean,
the Silk and the Incense Roads, then the
Holy Land – the destination of devout
pilgrims as well as crusaders and
merchants… Silks, spices, wines, raisins
cotton, wheat, essences, pigments, precious
manuscripts and incunabula are the
economical base of our Civilization! But a
single lifetime is not enough to explore
everything there is to be seen in Venetian
and Byzantium’s Land and, as Proust said,
wandering around the “Oriental city” you
get the impression of being in a “boite à
surprise” – a magic box full of secrets and
serendipity.

Timeline: Day 1 Ravenna
Private transfer from Bologna airport to
Ravenna and accommodation at the 4 star
Historic Residence in the city centre .
Ravenna is a true jewel of art in Italy ,
famous for its Byzantine mosaics, and it is
also an important port on the Adriatic Sea,
is surrounded by the water : the sea and
canals and wetlands at its back. Ravenna
was the capital of the Western Roman
Empire, then, under Theodoric Emperor,it
was the most powerful seat of Eastern Roman
Empire of the Byzantine period and it
became the Capital of the Exarchate. In the
town there are eight UNESCO monuments,
seven of which are decorated with beautiful
mosaics and this art is still handed down
and taught in schools and workshops of
craftsman-artists. This tradition, which is
unique, is still lively at international
level, thanks to creators, artists and
restorers. Ravenna also keeps important
traces left by the Republic of Venice ,
such as the Rocca ( fortress ) and the
central Piazza del Popolo square. In the
afternoon you will meet your guide at the
hotel for a guided visit : Basilica di S.
Apollinare in Classe , Mausoleo di
Teodorico and St Vitale Church. Dinner will
be in a typical restaurant close to your
hotel , where you will taste typical
genuine cuisine of this area (Romagna).
Ravenna keeps also the secrets of the
tasty culinary tradition of Romagna : this
city is very careful not to neglect its own
traditions nor its own food , in this way
they manage to save their gastronomic
identity which is fundamental for the
culture of a people . This is the land of
“cappelletti”, “passatelli” , “piadina”,
wonderful fresh vegetables and aromatic
herbs.
Day 2 Ravenna – Sant’ Apollinare in Classe
Basilica - Comacchio - Pomposa Abbey
Meeting with the guide in the morning for a
guided walking tour in the historic centre
of Ravenna . You will visit il Mausoleo di
Galla Placidia , Battistero Neoniano, il
Battistero degli Ariani and Basilica di
Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. While we will visit
the masterpieces of this small town, we
will visit also a famous mosaic workshop,
to know how much this art is still lively
here.
Then we will visit the Basilica of
Sant'Apollinare in Classe, a superbe
example of Byzantine art. The UNESCO cited
this basilica as "an outstanding example of
the early Christian basilica in its purity
and simplicity of its design and use of
space and in the sumptuous nature of its
decoration". Lunch will be in a typical
“trattoria” in the old fisher’s town of
Comacchio, tasting eel with white wine.
Then onto Pomposa Abbey , a Benedictine
monastery near Ferrara, it is one of the
most important monasteries in the North of
Italy, situated in a wonderful park.
Founded with all likeliness in the 6th
century, documented in 874 and reconfirmed
in a long series of imperial diplomas in
1022. Even today, in a testimony to its
traditional hospitality for pilgrims,
significant decorations made with glazed
terracotta bowls of various colors can be
seen on the façade of the church.
The Abbey experienced its greatest
prosperity under the governing of the abbot
Guido degli Strambiati, later made a saint,
who held this position from 1008-1017, from
1019-1036, and from 1038-1046. In that time
period, the colony had an extensive library
and an important cultural life. Among its
guests, the most famous were Guido
D’Arezzo, Pier Damiani and later even Dante
Alighieri.
The Abbey is a real architectural jewel,
with a beautiful bell tower with Lombard
forms built in 1063, an atrium decorated
with clay friezes, the naves held up with
recycled Roman or Byzantine columns,
frescoes of the Bologna School and Vitale
degli Equi - its most representative
painter of the 1300s and antique floor
mosaics placed between the sixth and 12th
centuries.
Day 3 Vicenza - Monselice – Euganean Hills
( Veneto )
Pick up in the morning and transfer by
private minibus to Vicenza, one of the
oldest cities in Veneto: founded by the
Euganean, under the domination of the Gauls
until 157 BC, then Roman colony, devastated
by the barbarians, flourished under the
Goths and the Lombards and the Franks, long
time Venetian territory. The sixteenth
century was its golden age, when rich
Patricians enriched the city with
magnificent architectural monuments thanks
to Andrea Palladio, one of the greatest
architects of the 1500's, who designed
noble palaces, villas and the famous
Olympic Theatre. After the Napoleonic
period, Vicenza passed to Austria in 1813
but in 1848 it rose against them. In 1866
it was united to the Kingdom of Italy.
Vicenza was dubbed a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO in 1996. We will visit the historic
centre, having some free time to taste
local specialties such as baccalà or
bìgoli, and the magnificent Villa La
Rotonda designed by Andrea Palladio . We
will reach the city following old roads of
the ancient Este dukedom, crossing the
bridge of Pontelagoscuro, on the Po river,
and historical villages such as Fratta
Polesine, Este and Montagnana. On the way
back, we will stop for a walk in the small
medieval town of Arquà Petrarca, on the top
of Southern Euganean Hills, were the great
poet lies since 1374.
Then onto Monselice and accommodation at
Villa Selvatico Sartori , a beautiful
private seventeenth century villa . The
Villa, is situated in its own expansive
park, in the middle of the Euganean hills,
providing a perfect base from which to
explore the surrounding mediaeval towns,
castles and villas.
Day 4 Sailing to Padua
Today we will explore the Battaglia Canal
sailing onboard a beautiful restored 1930’s
Bragosso, a typical Venetian boat , used
for the transportation of goods and guests
during Venetian age. We will arrive by boat
to the very centre of Padua, few steps away
from the Cappella degli Scrovegni , which
boasts the most comprehensive collection of
preserved frescoes painted by Giotto,
after the visit of the Giotto masterpieces
we will visit the historic centre of Padua.
Then we will sail back to our Villa in
Monselice. Dinner in Monselice.
Day 5 Brenta Canal, Villas and Venice
Today we will reach the “ Bragosso “ boat
for a cruise on the Brenta Canal , the
famous waterway which linked the Venetian
aristocrat to his Villas. We will visit
the stunning eighteenth century Villa
Pisani in Strà, afterwards we will visit
the Molini di Dolo, the antique mill which
is situated in Dolo , a lovely town on the
banks of the Brenta River. We will stop for
lunch at Villa Nani Mocenigo, then we will

Day 6 Venice – San Servolo - San Lazzaro
degli Armeni
This morning we will meet our guide at the
Porta della Carta for a guided walking tour
: Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s Square and St
Mark’s Basilica, Rialto Bridge. Then you
will have the extraordinary opportunity to
visit with your guide a Gondola yard and an
Atelier of Venetian Masks. The Tramontin
gondola yard dates from the XIXth cent. ,
when Venice joined the Reign of Italy. On
the occasion of the visit of the King
Vittorio Emanuele IInd in Venice, Domenico
Tramontin was asked to make a traditional
gondola for his family, today displayed in
the courtyard of the Doge's Palace. The
master in charge, Roberto Tramontin, will
explain to you the history and the
features of such a special boat, designed
and meant exclusively for the Venice
canals.
In the eighteenth century , Venice was
renowned for the most famous Carnival in
the world. Any social class joined and
experienced Carnival , a time of
amusement, transgression, astonishment,
creativity and liveliness. The mask maker
of the Atelier will tell you the history of
the Venetian masks through the centuries,
the different reasons why people loved
disguising themselves, and show you the
most common Venetian masks which are still
produced according to the traditional
processes. After some free time for a
quick meal in the area of the old market,
we will get the vaporetto from San Zaccaria
onto the Islands of San Servolo and San
Lazzaro degli Armeni. Benedictine monks
lived on San Servolo from at least the
eighth century and for almost five hundred
years. They were joined later by nuns
escaping from the convents of Saints Leone
and Basso on the island of Malamocco, which
had been destroyed by a seaquake. At the
beginning of the 15th century the nuns
departed, but they were soon replaced by a
few dozen other nuns, who were fleeing the
Turkish invasion of Crete. However, by the
beginning of the eighteenth century, only a
few were left, and soon thereafter the
Senate of the Republic of Venice designated
San Servolo as the site of a new military
hospital, needed due to the continuing war
against the Turks. Later the hospital was
used to care for the mentally ill. From
1995 San Servolo is a centre for research
and education and a collaboration among ten
universities from around the world
belonging to the Venice International
University and the Accademia di Belle Arti.
We will visit San Lazzaro degli Armeni for
a monk’s guided tour: completely occupied
by a monastery that is the mother-house of
the Mekhitarist Order, the island is one of
the world's foremost centres of Armenian
culture.
Back to Venice

Day 7 Venetian Lagoon FD
We will discover the treasures of the
Venetian Lagoon by a traditional Venetian
boat called “Bragosso ”, we will travel
through a unique ecosystem , small canals
, shallow water and sandbanks , stopping
to visit fishermen houses or antique
monasteries and we will taste the typical
Venetian Cuisine in a local Trattoria . On
our tour we will be guided by people who
live and work in the Lagoon and will be
happy to show us every detail of the life
there. Travelling through the Lagoon Canals
we will discover the natural habitat of the
local wildlife , seeing birds such as
herons . The Boat we will use is a
traditional wooden boat called Bragosso,
ideal for small groups ( max 12 people ) ,
which allows the navigation.
Program of the day :
departure from Venice towards St. Erasmo
Island , known for market gardening (very
famous for its artichokes, the "castraure")
this island is called also the Orto (
Vegetables garden ) of Venice for the local
delicacies , vegetables. St’ Erasmo,
together with the nearby Vignole Island
represents the “countryside of Venice “.
Visit of the Murano ‘s seven Islands: the
Church of Santa Maria e San Donato (known
for its twelfth century Byzantine mosaic
pavement and said to house the bones of the
dragons lain by Saint Donatus), the church
of San Pietro Martire with the chapel of
the Ballarin family built in 1506 and
artworks by Giovanni Bellini, and the
Palazzo da Mula. Then we will get the
opportunity to watch a glassmaker at work
in his furnace: Murano’s reputation as a
centre for glassmaking was born when the
Venetian Republic, fearing fire and the
destruction of the city’s mostly wooden
buildings, ordered glassmakers to move
their foundries to Murano in 1291. Murano
glass is still associated with Venetian
glass.
Then we will sail toward one of the jewels
of the Lagoon, the old convent of St
Francesco del Deserto , still inhabited by
the Friars Minori, and not accessible by
public transport . There we will visit the
convent , then we take a short break in
Burano and we sail toward the Park of North
Lagoon , through small canals, saltmarshes
, abandoned Islands ideal for
birdwatching. Our next stop will be stop
in Torcello and sail to Venice through
Mazzorbo Island .
Mazzorbo is connected to Burano by a bridge
, the landscape there is truyl unusual ,
characterized by cultivated areas,
vineyards and orchards . In Mazzorbo we
will visit a “ special wine estate “ : the
Wine Estate testimonies the cultural
history of the lagoon farmer as linked to
the production of wines and vegetables, it
has been preserved over the centuries
firstly as a convent vegetable garden, then
as a domestic vineyard and today it offers
guests the chance to visit a protected area
of incredible merit from the point of view
of landscape, agriculture, human endeavour
and equipment. This is a perfect example
of a “walled vineyard”, the whole 2
hectares estate, is enclosed in eighteenth
century walls which were partly rebuilt in
the following centuries and features
classical buildings erected in the
traditional rural architectural style of
the lagoon: the manor house, the cellars,
the stable, the barn and the equipment
outhouses.
